Stuff I have learned so far…

After 15 days of riding there are some things I have learned I thought I would share…

  1. Mountains look bigger on the map and in the distance but once you start up them it’s not so bad. Take breaks and keep going.
  2. Subaru drivers are the most courteous when passing cyclists. So far, as a rule, they always slow down and move way over to pass. (Not because I used to drive one lol)
  3. Logging trucks are the LEAST friendly to bikes. Surprising because they are professional drivers, but they must have a rule about not being patient or giving extra room and they enjoy spraying water.
  4. Sometimes, even during prayer time riding, God shows off His creation with a waterfall, forest view, meadow of flowers, etc. It’s ok to pause the conversation with Him and say Wow!
  5. Regardless of the circumstance (flat tire in the cold rain, snow squall out of nowhere, abnormally cold temps while camping, etc.) there is little use in complaining. Realize there must be a reason and not knowing the “but why” is ok.
  6. Guys can ride bikes next to each other for hours and hours and not say a word to each other and it is perfectly ok! In fact sometimes we like it like that!
  7. Tires are your friend. Make sure they are tough and inflated. Brakes are your friend too! Make sure they work well. If you’re worried about either…. Going fast down a mountain is scary and not as much fun as it should be.
  8. Sleeping in a different place every night is weird but also an adventure.
  9. Little blessings are great reminders of God’s constant love. A few minutes of sun to get warm, a flat rock to sit and cook on, ziplock bags to keep things dry, an encouraging friendly conversation at a convenience store, coffee, or a dry place to have lunch.
  10. You don’t need the best bike, gear, or training. We can make do with very little and be just fine. Just be thankful and keep moving forward.
  11. Messages of encouragement come from people and the Lord at just the right time, you just have to be listening!
  12. And finally, your legs can be strong and powerful for hours but take a single 5 minute break and they start off tired and angry. The appropriate response then when they say, “why such a big mountain?” is shut up and keep going!

Bonus lesson…. It’s hard to type without typos on an iPad 🙂 … Next time bring a keyboard.

Let’s see what more I learn during the next few days! I am leaving Missoula, MT and am off to Darby after breakfast!

Entering Montana!!!
